Do You Love The Smiths?

Any film with The Smiths in its soundtrack has to be good, it's (almost) a metaphysical law. So, when I saw the trailer for (500) Days of Summer and watched the scene where the protagonists meet whilst Tom is listening to There is a light that never goes out, one of my all-time favorite songs, I knew this was for me. All through the movie we listen to pop hymns of love and hate, illusion and disillusion. I must admit that (500) Days Of Summer's soundtrack influences a lot on why I loved the movie (it has a great, eclectic soundtrack, including The Black Lips, Carla Bruni, Feist, The Doves, Simon & Garfunkel and Wolfmother), but it's not all that's great about it. The photography is beautiful, the scenario is flawless, and even if we all know what's gonna happen from the beginning, we still follow Tom through his journey trying to conquer Summer's heart, which leaves us a bittersweet taste at the end...  Joseph Gordon-Lewitt is remarcably good on his role of the hopeless romantic, as well as Zooey Deschanel as the realistic b****. What I found especially touching about this movie, is that we all get to recognize ourselves in both characters. We all get to be Tom or Summer at a moment in our lives. It's tough to admit it, but that's the way love works, always getting to deal with the reality of life and trying to make it reach our expectations, which hardly ever works (we get to see this on the Reality/Expectations sequence which I found really innovative). Even if you don't usually enjoy "romantic comedies", you should give this one a try. Hardly you'll be disappointed. //
